The Microsoft SQL Server 2025 Device CAL entitles a specific device to access a SQL Server 2025 instance licensed under the Server/CAL model. Unlike the User CAL, the license is tied to the device – any number of employees may access the database through it.

Device-based licensing is worthwhile wherever several people share a workstation: in shift operations, at point-of-sale systems, at terminals in manufacturing, or on shared computers in the warehouse. In these cases, it is significantly cheaper than a User CAL per employee.

Important Licensing Information

  • Each CAL requires a valid server license for SQL Server 2025.
  • CALs are not cross-version compatible – SQL Server 2025 requires CALs of version 2025.
  • The license is valid indefinitely, with no recurring costs.
