Server+CAL or core-based licensing?
For a few known users, Server+CAL is worthwhile. For many or unknown users - for example, with internet-based applications - core-based licensing is almost unavoidable.
Which CAL do I need in addition?
With Server+CAL licensing, every accessing user or device additionally requires a SQL Server CAL.
Is a used SQL Server license legal?
Yes – according to the ECJ ruling, used server licenses may also be resold. For volume or core packages, the following also applies: They may not be arbitrarily split up.
Frequent Questions about SQL Server
Does SQL Server run without a separate Windows Server license?
No - SQL Server runs on a Windows Server operating system and requires it as its foundation. Both licenses are purchased separately.
Can I switch from Server+CAL to Core licensing later?
Yes, a change of license model is possible, but it requires a new license that matches the respective model. A direct upgrade of an existing license is not provided for used software.
Do I need CALs for a purely internal database?
Yes, provided you are using Server+CAL licensing – internal, non-public applications also count as access and require one CAL per user or device.
What happens if I have more users than CALs?
This is considered under-licensing and will be noticed in a license audit. When your teams are growing, it's better to plan with a buffer or switch to core-based licensing once you reach a certain number of users.
Does SQL Server even make sense for small businesses?
Yes, especially the Standard Edition with Server+CAL licensing is often the most cost-effective professional solution for small teams with few database users.
