User CAL or Device CAL - which one is right for you?
People with multiple devices will find User CALs more cost-effective. Shared terminals or shift-workstations are better served by Device CALs.
Planning Remote Desktop Services?
For RDS, the normal CAL is not sufficient – an additional, separate RDS CAL is required, per user or per device.
CALs for SQL Server
Alternatively to core-based licensing, SQL Server can also be operated via Server+CAL – which is economical as long as the number of accessing users or devices is small and known.
Frequently Asked Questions about CALs
Can I use one CAL for multiple different server products?
No - CALs are product-specific. A Windows Server CAL does not grant access to SQL Server, and vice versa. Each server product requires the appropriate CAL.
Are CALs perpetually valid?
Yes, our CALs are perpetual licenses without a subscription – as long as they match the respective server version, there's no expiration date.
Can I purchase additional CALs later if my team grows?
Yes, CALs can be repurchased individually or in packages at any time – there is no fixed minimum term or commitment to a specific date.
Do I need a CAL for interns or temporary employees too?
Yes – every server access counts, regardless of the employment duration. For short-term engagements, a Device CAL on a shared device can often be the more cost-effective solution.
How do I know which CAL type I already have?
The license type is stated in your order confirmation and invoice. If you are unsure, you can also check the server administration, where the active CAL mode (per device or per user) is stored.
