Frequently Asked Questions about Server Licenses
What is the difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter?
Standard is suitable for physical or lightly virtualized environments (up to 2 virtual machines per license). Datacenter allows unlimited virtualization and is only worthwhile with many VMs on the same hardware. For most small and medium-sized businesses, Standard is sufficient.
Can I use a CAL for a newer server version?
No. CALs are tied to the server version for which they were issued and do not automatically grant access to a newer version. When upgrading to a new server version, you generally also need corresponding CALs for that version.
How many core licenses do I need for my server?
Microsoft licenses Windows Server per physical core, with a minimum purchase of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server. Count the actual cores of your hardware to avoid subsequent purchases – if in doubt, we will be happy to advise you beforehand.
What is the difference between Windows Server and SQL Server?
Windows Server is the server operating system that forms the basis. SQL Server is a database platform that runs on a server. Both typically also require appropriate CALs for the accessing users or devices.
Do I need a special CAL for remote desktop access?
Yes. In addition to the regular CAL, a separate RDS CAL is required for using Remote Desktop Services (RDS) – per user or per device, depending on which licensing model best suits your environment.
