How many core licenses do I need?
At least 8 core licenses per processor, at least 16 per server – regardless of the actual number of cores. The guide explains three calculation examples and the exact rule.
Which CAL do I need in addition?
The server license alone is not enough - each accessing user or device additionally requires a CAL. User CALs for mobile employees, Device CALs for shared terminals.
Planning Remote Desktop Services (RDS)?
For RDS, the standard Server CAL is not sufficient – a separate RDS CAL is also required, either per user or per device.
Still on Windows Server 2012 R2?
Extended support ended on October 10, 2023 – since then, there have been no more security updates. An upgrade to 2022 or 2025 is long overdue.
Is a used server license legal?
Yes – according to the ECJ ruling, used server licenses may also be resold. For volume licenses, the following also applies: Packages may not be arbitrarily split.

Which Windows Server version should I choose - 2019, 2022, or 2025?
For new purchases, we recommend 2022 or 2025 due to the longer support period. 2019 is functionally proven but closer to end of support – please check Microsoft's current lifecycle information before purchasing.
Will my existing software also run on a newer Windows Server version?
In most cases, yes, especially for standard applications like file sharing or databases. For older industry-specific software, a compatibility test is advisable beforehand, ideally in a virtual test environment.
Do I need a separate CAL for each virtual machine?
No - CALs entitle users or devices to access the server as a whole, regardless of how many virtual machines are running on it. The number of VMs is solely governed by the server edition (Standard or Datacenter).
Can I also use Windows Server for a small home network?
Technically yes, economically usually not sensible. Windows Server is designed for enterprise functions like Active Directory and file server services – for private purposes, a normal Windows operating system is usually sufficient.
What happens if I don't activate Windows Server?
The server continues to run with limited functionality and shows recurring activation notices. For productive use, activation should occur promptly after installation.
