Office activation fails: the most common errors and their solutions
Four causes explain almost every failed Office activation. The symptoms, the respective solutions, and how telephone activation via Microsoft works in detail.

Short answer: Most failed Office activations have four causes: a remaining old installation, a version conflict between the key and the installation file, a blocked connection to the activation server, or an already exhausted activation limit. In almost all cases, activation can be completed by phone through Microsoft.
Error 1: An old Office installation is blocking
This is the most common cause. If a previous Office version or a Microsoft 365 trial version is still on the computer, the installations will conflict. Typical message: The product could not be activated.
Solution: Completely uninstall any existing Office version, restart the computer, and only then install the new version. Microsoft provides its own support and recovery tool for this purpose, which removes remnants that normal uninstallation leaves behind.
Error 2: Key and installation file do not match
A volume license key cannot be activated with a retail installation file – and vice versa. The edition must also match exactly: a Professional Plus key will not activate a Standard installation.
Solution: Check which installation file you used. Use the download link you received with your license key, instead of a random file from the internet. At Firstsoft, the installation file comes directly from Microsoft and matches the delivered key.
Error 3: The connection to the activation server is blocked
In corporate networks, firewalls or proxies often filter out the activation request. The same happens with aggressively configured security programs on private computers.
Solution: Try activating via a different connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If it works there, it's due to the network and IT needs to unblock Microsoft activation services.
Error 4: The activation limit has been reached
Each license allows a limited number of activations. If the same key is used multiple times or after several hardware changes, this limit will be reached.
Solution: Only telephone activation helps here. This is not an unusual case, but the method provided by Microsoft for this purpose.
How telephone activation works
Open an Office application, go to File, then Account. If online activation does not occur, Office offers the telephone activation assistant. You will receive an installation ID, read it aloud, and receive a confirmation ID in return.
Have your invoice ready. The process usually takes a few minutes.
